Calling 3rd base…

=====(rant mode engaged)====

What is it about the hot corner in this town? The last guy we had who could put up numbers of value there was Mike Blowers (.289 in 1994) , and that was platooning the infield. And before that, it was…..

Edgar Martinez. who wasted his best playing years toiling in the minors behind the Juggernaut , Jim Presley.

Who, I might add, never hit above .275 in a season. That’s an off year for the Edganator.

Since Edgar went down for the count in 1994, the Mariners have been trying to get a bat over there. Someone, anyone, who could hit for average and power. David Bell came close, but I used to cringe everytime he came up with 2 outs. He’d be out #3 more often than I want to remember.

And he was a 2nd baseman.

I can’t even point to Willie Bloomquist as our savior (he hit .290 at 3b last year) Because it’s not likely he’ll ever play there again.

Too much talent.

We are doomed. Doomed. Our top Prospect in the minors is hitting .263 so he’s not coming up anytime soon.

We’ve got two guys on the roster who are hitting the cover off the ball (Dave Hansen, Jolbert Cabrera), but both are capable of playing third base well.

So, clearly, they’re not going to start there very often.

The M’s even tried to trade Gil Meche today for a third baseman from Detroit. He was a catcher last year.

The trade was bocked on their end, and tehn today they found out the kid had a broken finger.

Whew. Skated another disaster.

P.S.

This rant was previously part of the Game 36 gamelog. But, true to Mariners form of late, it got erased while I was typing this one.

It was happy, and positive, to a point.

Now, all I have left is my rage. Argh.
